Caption: Secretary bird (Serpentarius reptilivorus), 1849 illustration. This bird of prey (now Sagittarius serpentarius) inhabits grassland and open spaces of sub-Saharan Africa. Although an accomplished flyer it remains mostly terrestrial. It feeds on snakes, large insects, lizards and rats, stamping the larger prey to death with its large claws.
