Caption: The World by Herodotus. 1886 replica of a map of the known world according to the Ancient Greek historian Herodotus (484 to 425 BC). Herodotus is best known for his documentation of the Greco-Persian wars 'The Histories', which occurred in 490 and 480-479 BC. The Histories also contains excellent ethnographic descriptions of the peoples that the Persians conquered, fairy tales, gossip, legends, and a very humanitarian morale. He is considered the world's first historian and often referred to as the Father of History .
