Caption: Highdown Gardens, Sussex, England. Colourful border featuring Paeonia, Papaver and Digitalis. Highdown gardens were created in an old chalk pit to prove that quality gardens could flourish in chalky soil. They were the creation of Sir Frederick and Lady Stern who worked for some fifty years to show that by selecting the right plants that gardening under these conditions was possible.
