Caption: Bone stress testing. Technician testing the mechanical strength of a sample of bone. This research is being done to help understand the effect of applied stress to medical devices and their constituent materials. Materials being studied include metals and polymers, biological materials and materials used in tissue-engineered scaffolds. It is possible to measure mechanical properties ranging from the tensile strength of sutures (stitches) and medical glove materials, to the fatigue strength of total joint prostheses and cardiovascular stents.
