Caption: Tonic water fluorescing. A glass of tonic water seen under visible light (left) and ultraviolet radiation (right). The fluorescence is due to quinine, a prophylactic against malaria. Tonic was originally created by British officials in india as a means of taking the bitter-tasting quinine. It was found to be more palatable with the addition of gin.
