Caption: Northern Party Antarctic ice cave. Northern Party member Frank Browning at the entrance to the ice cave inhabited by him and five others in the winter of 1912 on Inexpressible Island during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), also known as the Terra Nova Expedition. Led by Robert Falcon Scott, a shore party of 33 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. The Northern Party landed in Victoria Land in February 1911. Marooned by pack ice, they barely survived. Forced to return by land, they arrived back in November 1912 to find that Scott and four others had died in March 1912 on their return from the South Pole.
