Caption: Sintering is the process whereby a material is heated to a temperature near or just under its melting point. It may happen naturally under conditions of volcanism or subsurface heat or it may be effected as an industrial process. The chunk of sintered limestone in this example has been heated to a point very near or just beyond its melting point, given the glassy and fluid nature of its makeup. Actual width is 200 mm.
