Caption: El Nino summer effects, illustration. El Nino is the warm phase of the El Nino/La Nina-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) that occurs across the tropical Pacific Ocean roughly every five years. The ENSO affects weather systems across the world, bringing extreme weather such as floods and droughts. The effects vary between summer and winter. This illustration shows summer effects, with areas of dry weather (brown), dry and cool or warm weather (yellow), warm weather (red) and wet weather (green). For the winter effects, see image C026/8985. For the La Nina effects in summer and winter, see images C026/8986 and C026/8987.
