Caption: El Nino winter effects, illustration. El Nino is the warm phase of the El Nino/La Nina-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) that occurs across the tropical Pacific Ocean roughly every five years. The ENSO affects weather systems across the world, bringing extreme weather such as floods and droughts. The effects vary between summer and winter. The winter effects include areas of dry weather (brown), dry and warm weather (yellow), warm weather (red), wet weather (green), wet and warm weather (light blue) and wet and cool weather (dark blue). For the summer effects, see image C026/8984. For the La Nina effects, see images C026/8986 and C026/8987.
