The colours represent the differences between the average temperature during this period and the 2001-2010 average for the same period. The scale runs from dark red, indicating surface temperatures 10 degrees Celsius higher than the December average, to dark blue, being 10 degrees cooler. During this time western Europe and North America's Pacific Northwest saw record-breaking temperatures.
