Caption: Viral conjunctivitis. Close-up of the eye of a 70-year-old male patient affected by viral conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis (pink eye) is inflammation of the conjunctiva - the outermost layer of the eye and inner surface of the eyelids. It can be caused by either viral (as here) or bacterial infection, or an allergic reaction. Symptoms may include redness, itchiness, irritation, pus discharge & sensitivity to light. Treatment involves washing the eye with warm water to remove any pus, & eye drops containing an antibiotic drug may be given. Viral conjunctivitis tends to get better without any treatment.
