Caption: Researcher making adjustments to the Rotating Target Neutron Source (RTNS-II). The RTNS-II contains several targets for the accelerated particle beam that exits the cylindrical object at left. Each target consists of a different material. When bombarded by the particle beam, each target produces neutrons at characteristic energies. These are then used to study the effect of neutrons on a variety of manufactured components. The RTNS-II is housed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, California.
