Caption: Hindenburg airship flight chart. Track chart showing the manoeuvres of the German airship Hindenburg (LZ 129) on 6th May 1937 when it crashed at Naval Air Station (NAS) Lakehurst, New Jersey, USA. This airship is famous for the Hindenburg disaster of 6th May 1937, when it caught fire and was destroyed during its attempt to dock with its mooring mast at NAS Lakehurst. Of the 97 crew and passengers on board 35 were killed, along with one member of the ground crew. The balloon was filled with hydrogen, a highly flammable gas. This chart was used by the board investigating the disaster but the cause of the accident has never been established. The disaster destroyed public confidence and marked the abrupt end of the airship era.
