Caption: A molecular ribbon model of estrogen receptor beta, a protein encoded by the ESR2 gene, found primarily in the kidneys, brain, bone, heart, lungs, intestinal mucosa, prostate and endothelial cells. After activated by estrogen hormones, estrogen receptors bind to DNA to regulate gene expression. Abnormal activity by estrogen receptors have been observed in cases of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer and endometrial cancer. The loss of estrogen receptor beta proteins can disrupt the process of apoptosis and are often associated with advanced colon cancer and the development of tumours.
