A molecular surface model of the SARS coronavirus, a single stranded RNA virus which causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). This viral respiratory disease produces initial symptoms similar to the common cold such as fever, muscle pain, coughing and sore throat. As the disease progresses, patients may suffer from shortness of breath, pneumonia or other signs of an upper respiratory tract infection. In early 2003, an outbreak of SARS which originated in China, spread across 37 countries and lead to 775 deaths worldwide. There is currently no cure or vaccine available for SARS, and most treatments involve quarantining patients and providing antipyretics, supplemental oxygen and ventilation support.
