Caption: A 3D illustration of an infected host cell with replicating ebola viruses budding off of the cell membrane. The ebola virus (EBV) is a single-stranded RNA filovirus responsible for severe and often fatal haemorrhagic fever in humans and other mammals. The virus is transmitted through infected body fluids and is often characterized by a shephard's crook, or thread-like coiled appearance. Patients suffering from ebola typically experience flu-like symptoms, which progress into severe vomiting, diarrhoea, and internal and external bleeding.
