Caption: Floating and sinking chemistry demonstration. In this demo, ice is put into water and observed to float (at left) while frozen t-butanol sinks when it is placed in liquid t-butanol (at right). Ice in its solid form is less dense than its liquid form (water) and so it floats in itself . This behaviour is contrasted with t-butanol, which sinks in itself .
