Caption: A molecular model of vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid), an essential nutrient responsible for the growth and development of tissues such as skin, ligaments, tendons, and blood vessels, as well as the repair and maintenance of cartilage, bone, and teeth. Vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant by helping to prevent damage caused by free radicals (chemicals which cause oxidative stress in the body). Fruits and vegetables contain naturally high concentrations of vitamin C, which is also widely used as a food additive.
