Caption: Molecular model of domoic acid (DA). DA is the neurotoxin that causes amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP). Domoic acid is produced by the single-celled diatom pseudo-nitzschia, a component of the phenomenon known as red tide. Domoic acid causes epilepsy in sea lions and has been called the single biggest biological threat along the California coast. Because of similarities between humans and sea lions, particularly the brains, researchers believe that new treatments may work on humans as well. Black=carbon, white=hydrogen, red=oxygen, blue=nitrogen.
