Caption: Illustration of MRSA, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection. This is not a virus, but strain of staph bacteria that has become resistant to antibiotics commonly used to treat ordinary staph infections. Antimicrobial resistance is a huge dilemma for the Healthcare community. The protein and gene that is responsible for this metamorphosis into a deadly bacteria has recently been discovered, and is shown in this illustration. Also depicted are new drugs which have been developed to target this genetic protein and destroy the MRSA bacteria.
