Caption: Bell X-2 Starbuster supersonic test plane. Footage showing the Bell X-2 Starbuster supersonic research aircraft in flight and landing. This rocket-powered aircraft was designed to fly three times as fast as the speed of sound, to investigate the problems of aerodynamic heating, stability and control at high speeds and altitudes. An X-2 reached Mach 3 - three times the speed of sound - on 27th September 1956. Unfortunately, there was a problem as the aircraft turned back towards Edwards Air Force Base, USA, and it began tumbling out of control. The plane crashed and the pilot, Captain Milburn Apt, did not survive. The crash ended the X-2 program.
