Caption: Lunar Landing Research Vehicle. A pilot climbs into a Lunar Landing Research Vehicle (LLRV), and launches into flight. These vehicles were built by Bell Aerosystems in the 1960s as part of the Apollo Project to land on the moon. Known affectionately as flying bedsteads , they were vertical take-off and landing vehicles powered by a single jet engine. The vehicles allowed Apollo astronauts to train for real moon landings.
