Caption: London Underground construction. Tunnellers in 1898 using a Thomson excavator or digger during the construction of one of the tunnels of part of the Central London Railway, now London Underground's Central line. This machine had a 5-metre-long dredging bucket ladder that projected horizontally towards the area being excavated. An electric motor drove the chain of buckets used to scrape clay away from the earth exposed in a 3-metre-wide circular opening. This excavator was operated inside the tunnelling shield (visible at upper right). Construction of the tunnels for this line began in 1896, with 9.14 kilometres of tunnelling completed by the end of 1898.
