Caption: Glacier on Spitsbergen. Satellite mosaic image of the main glacier on the island of Spitsbergen, part of Norway's Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic. The terrain is rugged, with around 60 percent of Svalbard covered in glaciers. This glacier was explored as part of an IceLegacy expedition. From 4-12 August 2014, the explorers Borge Ousland and Vincent Colliard crossed 180 kilometres of the glacier on skis. Over the next 10 years, they aim to cross the world's 20 largest glaciers on skis to highlight the issues of glacier retreat and climate change. Image obtained by the SPOT 6 satellite in the winter of 2013.
