Blepharisma species are single-celled filter-feeding protozoa that are found in freshwater. They feed on bacteria and decaying organic matter, which they filter through membranelles in their primitive mouth, known as a buccal cavity. When feeding conditions are good they can grow to an enormous size. Dinoflagellates are also unicellular protozoans. About 90 per cent are found in marine environments as plankton but they also occur widely in fresh water. They range in size from 2 millimetres to less than a hundredth of a millimetre across.
