Caption: Colour enhanced scanning electron microscope (SEM) of carrot pollen. Carrots (Daucus carota var. sativa) are grown from seeds for their edible enlarged red roots which contain, among others, pro-vitamin A called beta-carotene. Their pollen-bearing flowers, which are small and white, don't grow until the year following that in which the seeds were sown. Image width: 42.6 micrometers. Magnification: 2,347x if printed 10 cm wide.
