The ability of Staphylococcus epidermidis to form biofilms on the surfaces of plastics was studied with respect to the contamination of catheters, transfusion bags, and other medical items. Under hospital conditions, diverse bacterial species may be found in a single biofilm. Their symbiosis, production of protective polysaccharides and a compact structure of the biofilm make the bacteria less sensitive to disinfecting agents. Image width: 21.4 micrometers.
