Caption: Earthworm haemoglobin. Coloured scanning trans- mission electron micrograph of the giant haemoglobin protein from the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris, viewed from the side (left) and the top (right). The micrographs each represent the averaged sum of many different original images, 50 in the case of the front view, 36 in the side view. Magnification is 435,000 times at 35mm size. Haemoglobin is the red respiratory pigment occurring in vertebrates, including humans and some other animals; it carries oxygen and it colours the blood red.
