Caption: Colour-enhanced Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a rat liver. An important function of the liver is processing and then distributing dietary lipids throughout the bloodstream. The rough reticulum synthesizes proteins which are combined with triglycerides from the smooth reticulum. This creates lipoproteins to carry lipids from the liver to the bloodstream.
