Colorized light micrograph showing Clostridium tetani (or bacillus Nicolaier), the bacterium that causes tetanus. Even minimal contamination of a wound results in the production of a neurotropic toxin (tetanospasmin), which binds in the central nervous system, causing paralysis and cramps.
