These structures are most often found on either side of a monocot's leaf. There are guard cells on each side of the opening that allow or prevent the entrance of gas and water, based on the needs of the plant. Stomata prevent excess evaporation (water loss) and gas exchange when the plant doesn't need it. Image width: 128 micrometers. Magnification: 781x if the image is printed 10 cm wide.
