Caption: Tropical Storm Alex. Satellite image of Tropical Storm Alex over the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean at 14:20 UTC on 15 January 2016. North is at top. The Azores are outlined just below the eye of the storm. The previous day, this storm had reached hurricane-force strength (winds of 140 kilometres per hour), becoming the first Atlantic hurricane to form in January since 1938. This image was obtained with the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on a Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) weather satellite. Image produced by LANCE (Land, Atmosphere Near Real-Time Capability for EOS) for NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS).
