Caption: Overhead view of the central detector which forms the core of the UA1 particle detector at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory outside Geneva. Named after its location at Underground Area 1, UA1 is a giant device consisting of many sub-detectors nestled within each other. It records collisions of protons & antiprotons in CERN's super-proton- synchrotron (SPS) accelerator. Its achievements include the discovery in 1983 of the two W particles & the Z particle`required by electroweak theory as the gauge bosons mediating the weak force.
