Myoglobin consists of a chain of amino acids folded into a globin molecule (purple helices), which is similar to the four globin subunits in haemoglobin. The haem group surrounds an iron atom (not seen) which can temporarily bind to oxygen (red), allowing it to be stored for use in the body. Myoglobin is found in muscle tissue, where it stores additional oxygen for use during strenuous exercise. The structure of the globin protein protects the haem oxygen it carries.
