Caption: According to UK and European Union regulations all wines that contain a concentration of sulphites/sulphite (sulphur dioxide SO2 ) more than 10 milligrams per litre are instructed to display on the label “contains sulphites” (or sulphur dioxide). All wines naturally contain sulphur dioxide but an additional amount is commonly introduced during vinification to prevent the wine turning to vinegar by acting as a preservative to prevent oxidation and spoilage and to arrest fermentation when necessary. Different amounts are added depending on the type of wine. Under EU regulations the total must not exceed 160 mg/l for red wines and 210 mg/l for white and rose wines.
