Caption: Drifting ocean garbage, global simulation. This animation shows data from scientific buoys (white dots) released over a period of around 35 years. The data has been adjusted to show all the buoys simultaneously, regardless of the date of release. This means that the buoys shown at any particular time have been in the water the same amount of time. The buoys accumulate into patches (brown). These are the five known gyres in the world's oceans, also known as ocean garbage patches. This result was similar to that obtained using a computational model of ocean currents called ECCO-2 (see clip K005/4103). The two combined datasets are shown in clip K005/4101. The ocean buoy data is from the Global Drifter Database (1979 to 2013) maintained by NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory. This simulation was published in 2015.
