The animation starts with two boxes of equal volume containing gas or liquid molecules with a solid reactant. The box at left has a lower surface area of solid exposed than in the box at right (where the surface area has doubled). The number of collisions (shown at bottom in each box) is recorded over a period of 15 seconds (timer at top centre). The rate of collisions is approximately two times as fast in the box with a higher surface area, leading to a faster reaction rate. Collision theory is closely related to reaction kinetics.
