Caption

Cone bush (Leucadendron album) seed head. Leucadendron album is a silvery evergreen shrub endemic to South Africa, found amongst fynbos vegetation. The seed head is a woody cone-like structure containing numerous seeds with silky-haired parachutes, enabling the seeds to be dispersed by wind. The cone is fire-proof and releases the seeds only after a fire has killed part or all of the plant. This cone has been scorched by wildfire and is beginning to open.
