Caption: Oscillating springs experiment. Footage of three masses of increasing weight being attached to identical springs to demonstrate Hooke's Law and the principle of harmonic oscillators. The central mass is twice that of the one at right, while the mass at left is three times that of the one at right. The masses cause the springs to stretch and oscillate, with the physics and mechanics of the oscillations described by Hooke's Law. The extension of the springs is proportional to the masses, while the frequency of the oscillation is independent of its amplitude. A mass suspended by a spring is the classical example of a harmonic oscillator, as used in watches and clocks.
