Caption: Bacterial cell, illustration. This is a generalised bacterium, illustrating features of different bacterial types that would not be combined in a single cell. The upper part is Gram positive: that is, it has a thick outer wall made of peptidoglycan over a single membrane. The lower part is Gram negative, with a thin peptidoglycan layer between two membranes. Flagella (long thin strands mostly at bottom) and cilia (short, closely packed strands at right), threads that allow bacteria to move, are also seen.

Release details: Model release not required. Property release not required.
