Caption: Woodcut by Gesner, "Icones Animalium" publ. Christof Froschover, Zurich, 1560. Some of the animals in this first zoological encyclopedia were drawn from life, others depended purely on travellers' tales or earlier drawn and written sources. This creature being a case in point. It's origins may lie in some of the deceptive fake taxidermy of sea creatures produced at the time for collectors.
