Caption: Adam Sedgwick (1785-1873), British geologist. Sedgwick once acted as a mentor to the student Charles Darwin in Cambridge. But he wrote a harsh review of a presentation of Darwin's 'Origin of Species' ideas in the Edinburgh review of 1860. He had written an even more scathing review of Chamber's evolutionary 'Vestiges of Creation' some ten years earlier. Darwin considered that few of the older generation of natural scientists, even those he had known and respected like Sedgwick, would come around to his point of view on natural selection. Some believe it was this that caused him to delay publication for so long after he had the idea. This portrait dates from 1867.
