Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), German author, scientist and statesman. Though he is most famous for his literary endeavours including Faust. His scientific work had considerable influence in his day. Darwin named Goethe as one of the forerunners of his evolutionary theory. He calls Goethe an 'extreme partisan of similar views'. However others have questioned how much Goethe's essentially morphological views, not relating to descent, could really be seen as prefiguring evolution.
