Caption: Architeuthis - Giant Squid - illustration in "The Cephalopods of the North-Eastern Coast of America" by A.E. Verrill, Transactions of the Connecticut Academy of Sciences, vol. 5, Dec. 1879–Mar. 1880.). Most of what was first known about the giant squid was published by Verrill from his observations on the few specimens available. This is the first accurate illustration of the species that had given rise to so many myths over the previous centuries. A species so large Verrill made it a four page pull-out illustration!.
