Caption: Edmund Cartwright (1743-1823), British inventor and Fellow of the Royal Society. Cartwright graduated from Oxford University very early and went on to invent the power loom in 1785 from a design he made the previous year. This had a major impact on the course of the British Industrial Revolution and global trade.
