Caption: George Campbell (1823-1900), Scottish peer and author, 8th Duke of Argyll. Campbell was a Fellow of the Royal Society (1851), a populariser of science, and a religiously pious member of the aristocracy. He stood firmly in opposition to Darwin and Huxley. His most important books were 'The Reign of Law' (1867), and 'Primeval Man: An Examination of some Recent Speculations' (1869). This Woodbury-type portrait from 'Men of Mark' dates from 1876.
