Caption: Kangaroo, 1790s illustration. This early depiction of a kangaroo is based on observations and specimens collected by European explorers, starting from the the landing in Australia by Captain James Cook in 1770. This copperplate illustration, titled 'Kanguroo' was published in 'Histoire naturelle generale et particuliere' (1799-1808) by the Comte de Buffon and Charles Nicolas Sigisbert Sonnini. The novelty of a marsupial mammalian fauna in Australia meant that illustrations were sought after in natural history books of the 18th and early 19th century.
