Caption: Venus fly trap, 18th century. This illustration is from 'Encyclopedie Methodique: Botanique' (Pancoucke, 1789) written by French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (1744-1829). This illustration was copied directly from the artwork accompanying the first description of Dionaea muscipula by British naturalist John Ellis (c.1710-1776), sent to Linnaeus in 1769.
