Caption: Andre Thevet (1516-1590), French explorer. Thevet was a French Franciscan priest most famous for his exploration of Brazil as chaplain of the fleet of Nicolas Villegaignon. He collected and described many plants and animals, often for the first time, including tobacco, manioc, pineapple, peanut, macaws, sloths, and tapirs. His published account included many inaccuracies and exaggerations however. Portrait woodcut from the 1620s.
