Caption: Biting lice of various species, antique lithograph with original colouring for Carl Hoffmann "Das Buch Der Welt" 1861. Lice are often adapted and specific to certain species and certain body regions. This print shows some of that diversity. Lice were a common problem for human sanitation throughout the 19th Century. The era of insecticides brought them under control, but they have shown a remarkable ability to survive and adapt resistance.
